Uganda started their 2017 CECAFA Senior Challenge campaign with a dull 0-0 draw against Burundi on Monday at Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega, Kenya.
In the wake of the stalemate, the East African giants now have one point after one match, but will meet South Sudan on Friday.
The Group B opener saw the defending champions dictating terms as early as the second minute when they received a free kick.
However, Muzamiru Mutyaba set up a low pass for Allan Kyambadde, whose effort from a distance was blocked by the Burundians.
There were few and far chances in front of goal towards the 20th minute, but an aerial cross from Allan Kateregga was received by Milton Karisa, yet he failed to beat the keeper, who made a great save.
With six minutes to the interval, Timothy Awany scored for Moses Basena’s side, but the goal was disallowed as he was guilty of infringement.
Despite their efforts, Uganda could not score and it was 0-0 at half time.
Although the Swallows were the better side in terms of defending, they were kept under pressure by the Cranes in the early stages of the second half.
The 50th minute saw Mutyaba attempting a long range effort, but the Burundian goalkeeper tipped the ball away for a corner.
With Uganda running out of steam towards the final stages of the contest, it was Burundi who showed hunger.
In the 87th minute, Nicholas Wadada was called to produce a brilliant save as he cleared the ball off the goal line to ensure both sides settled for a point.
The draw for the Swallows means they are placed at the second spot with one point after this opening encounter and will meet Ethiopia on Thursday.
