Bloemfontein Celtic and SuperSport United will battle for a place in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup when they meet at Dr Molemela Stadium on 11 February 2018, kick-off at 15h30.

The teams will be meeting for a second successive match, having faced off in a league encounter this past weekend. It was a goal-laden, exciting affair in Tshwane which saw United claim a 4-2 win. It ended their run of four matches without a victories, and extended Celtic’s winless streak to five games.

Phunya Sele Sele have won the Nedbank Cup just once, back in 1985, while their participation in the 2017 edition ended in the quarterfinals when they were beaten 2-1 after extra time by eventual runners-up Orlando Pirates.

Matsatsantsa are the reigning and five-time champions of the Nedbank Cup. In fact, their triumph in the 2017 edition – which saw them overcome Royal Eagles, KwaDukuza United, Kaizer Chiefs, Chippa United and Orlando Pirates – made them the first team to defend the Cup title since Santos, who won it back-to-back in 2001 and 2003 (there was no National Cup played in 2002).

In head-to-head stats, Celtic and SuperSport have met in three previous cup matches. Phunya Sele Sele have advanced on all three occasions, claiming one outright win and two via penalty shootouts after the teams couldn’t be separated over 120 minutes of football.

The teams’ last cup clash was in the first round of this season’s Telkom Knockout: hosts Celtic fought back from two goals down to force a 2-2 draw, before winning the post-match shootout 5-4. Phunya Sele Sele went all the way to the TKO final, but lost out 0-1 at the hands of Bidvest Wits.

Across all competitions, Celtic and United have met in 52 matches since 1990. Each side has claimed 12 wins, while no less than 28 games have ended in draws. The teams last met in the above-mentioned league clash on February 3.
