Title hopefuls Napoli held by AC Milan; Benevento keep survival dreams alive
Napoli dropped two points in their Serie A title bid as they were held to a goalless draw by European hopefuls AC Milan at the San Siro on Sunday.
Despite extending their unbeaten run to five matches, Napoli slipped further off the pace in their quest to reel in leaders Juventus.
Milan had a Mateo Musacchio goal chalked off for offside while Allan, Jose Callejon and Lorenzo Insigne were denied for the visitors.
Cheick Diabate scored a brace for the third time in as many matches as bottom side Benevento kept their slim survival hopes alive in a 2-2 topsy-turvy draw at Sassuolo, who moved four points clear of the relegation zone.
Diabate opened the scoring for the visitors midway through the first half, but Matteo Politano equalised four minutes before the break.
Sassuolo went ahead for the first time through Politano’s 64th-minute effort before Diabate struck again to rescue a much-needed point for Benevento.
Bologna returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over second-bottom Verona thanks to goals from top-scorer Simone Verdi and Adam Nagy.
In the early game, Fiorentina‘s six-match winning run was ended as they were held to a goalless draw at home to relegation-threatened SPAL.
The hosts dominated from the start and came close with five shots on target in the opening 45 minutes but goalkeeper Alex Meret was in top form to keep his clean sheet intact.
The Viola continued to press in the second half but were kept at bay as Meret continued to thwart their efforts and denied a late Gil Dias effort.
